Assam is an attractive tourist destination for domestic as well as foreign tourists for its rich bio-diversity, beautiful natural landscapes, historic and archeological sites. Due to the steps taken by the Congress party and its GovernmentAssam has gained in importance as a tourist destination among the domestic and foreign tourists.
As per the promises in the last Assembly election, the tourism sector has developed in a massive way, as a result, the numbers of domestic and foreign tourists have increased to 38,95,525 and 14,699 (as of now) as against 10,10,000 and 6,200 in 2001 respectively. Moreover, the present Congress Government has launched a Tourism Policy, as a result of which the Food Craft Institute at Samguri in Nagaon has come up and courses have already been started. Similarly, the construction of the Institute of Hotel Management at Jorhat is going on.
As per the promises, a total of 357 educated unemployed youth have been provided with Rs. 3 lakh each in 2008-09 for purchasing tourist vehicles under Chief Minister’s Assam Bikash Yojana and steps have been initiated for another one thousand youth under the scheme in 2010-11.

+ All possible steps will be taken up to make Assam an attractive tourist destination worldwide.
+ A bronze statue of the legendary figure of Assam, Lachit Borphukan will be erected in the midst of the Brahmaputra.
+ The construction of the five- star hotel, named ‘Vivanta’ to be built in Guwahati will be completed.
+ A 4-storey luxurious cruise ship, equipped with ultramodern facilities, which is under construction, will be opened for tourists.
+ The potential places of tourism such as religious and historical sites will be developed as centres of tourist attraction by enhancing their beauty. More thrust will be given to co-tourism.
+ In the next tenure, with massive expansion of the tourism sector, the educated unemployed youths will be provided with self-employment opportunities.
+ Steps will be taken for early completion of the construction work of the Hotel Management Institute at Jorhat so that the youth of the state can get training and employment opportunities in the hospitality sector.


As per the election promises by the Congress party in the last Assembly elections, 3 lakh unemployed youth have been appointments in the Government sector during the five-year tenure of the Congress Government. A large number of ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and helpers have got appointment, besides scores of unemployed youths have been appointed in the Education, Police, Forest, Health, Tourism, Transport, General Administration departments etc.
The upper age limit for Government jobs has been raised to 38 years.
