sentiment over the illegal migrants issue. The AGP leaders said that the state had 60-70 lakh illegal migrants. But when they came to power, the illegal migrants issue was pushed to the background? They promised a golden and prosperous Assam and people of Assam believed in them. No political party could ever win such overwhelming faith of the people as the AGP, in the annals of the state. But what did the people of Assam receive in return? After coming to power, did they serve the people or fulfill their self interest? It is proved that there is none more selfish than the AGP Party. The AGP leaders had signed the Assam Accord with the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi who wanted to solve the foreigners issue and put Assam on the path of development.

Everyone knows that the malaise of bandh culture was then started which is still hurting the state. Misuse of power after coming to power was not the culture of Assam. During its two tenures spanning almost ten years, the AGP ensured retardation of development works by corruption and numerous scandals like rice scandal, LoC scandal, potato scam, shallow tube well scam, green house scam etc. During the period of AGP rule, the Assam of Assam could not get anything other the scams. They never hesitated to misuse the funds earmarked for development activities for their own personal gains. The AGP period was a dark chapter in the history of Assam.

It can be mentioned that the aim of those student leaders who started the Assam agitation that led to the death of many innocent youth and farmers, was not to remove illegal migrants from the state, but instead aimed to grab power by using the sentiments of the people. Clear evidence of it was seen when the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi came to Assam in 1980 and asked these student leaders to agree to 1971 as the cut-off year to identify and deport the illegal migrants, those leaders who presently hold various portfolios in AGP rejected this proposal. Even the offer of 1967 as the cut-off year put forth through the then Governor, L P Singh was turned down. The reason for this rejection was not the interests of the State but that most of the student leaders were then not even 25 years old and hence ineligible to contest elections. The agitation was unnecessarily dragged on only in order to fulfill their own interests, and the innocent people of Assam were made to suffer. Seeds of hatred in our society were sown by these leaders. It is significant that these very leaders, after five years in 1985, on the initiative of the then Prime Minister, Late Rajiv Gandhi, agreed to sign the Assam Accord and the cut-off year to identify illegal migrants were set at 1971. Following this, these leaders floated a political party named Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and thus took over the reins of power. The golden Assam projected by AGP remained an elusive dream for the people who after suffering at the hands of the AGP evicted the AGP Government .

The people of Assam will never forget that terrible days of secret killings of innocent people by unidentified killers who with their faces covered with black clothes used to carry off people at night and brutally murdered them. It was AGP that unleashed that terror on the people of Assam.
The AGP Government did not hesitate to gag the fourth pillar of democracy. In addition to bringing privilege motion in Assembly against the journalists, they were arrested.
In all, the people of Assam have identified the tenure of AGP as the darkest chapter in the history of Assam.
